ABOUT PHYSICAL EDUCATION AT PALM
- Students must receive a total of 135 minutes of “structured” TEKS-based physical education/physical activity per week.
- Students are scheduled for 45 minutes of grade level physical education every 3rd day, taught by a certified Physical Educator.
- Classroom teachers must provide the additional “structured” physical activity (WOW) time each week to reach the required 135 minutes. Most days WOW is 20 minutes with 10 minutes designated to Marathon Kids. Students also receive 30 minutes of recess daily.
- Classroom teachers are provided with quality “structured” physical activities for Working Out for Wellness (WOW) time for the classroom.
- Students must wear appropriate shoes and clothing to ensure safety while being physically active.
ABOUT YOUR TEACHER
Coach Gonzalez is in his 7th year of teaching Physical Education at Svante Palm Elementary School and 2nd year as a traveling teacher at Perez Elementary School. He moved to Austin from El Paso, TX in 2013. Prior to Palm, he taught P.E. at an intermediate elementary school and coached high school soccer at Clint ISD.
Coach Gonzalez has always loved being physically active and played almost every sport offered in middle school. He started playing soccer at the age of 8 and stuck to it ever since. After high school, he walked on for the University of Texas Permian Basin Falcons men's soccer team in 2007. He then transferred to the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) the following year and continued playing soccer while pursuing his Kinesiology degree.
In Austin ISD, Coach Gonzalez worked as a freshman soccer coach at Reagan High School from 2016-2019. After that, he transferred to Bowie HS where he currently coaches soccer.
Coach Gonzalez currently holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology, a Texas Educator Certificate specializing in (EC-12) Physical Education and National U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) coaching licenses.
